Ralph J. Henneman, P.E.
Chairman Emeritus
When Mr. Henneman founded our firm in 1961,
he envisioned a company that would provide
engineering solutions responsive to
clients’ needs in an innovative, cost
effective, and professional manner.
Forty-seven years later, the Henneman team of
professionals still shares his vision.
Today, Mr. Henneman serves as Chairman
Emeritus of Henneman Engineering, Inc.
Mr. Henneman, a 1949 graduate of the
University of Illinois’ Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE),
has 57 years of experience as an electrical
engineer, mentor, and leader. In 1996, he
received the University of Illinois’
Distinguished Alumnus Award, and in 1994, he
was presented with the Marcia Peterman Award
in recognition of dedicated service to ECE.
Mr. Henneman is a former president of the
ECE Board. Prior to establishing our
firm, Mr. Henneman held engineering
positions with Holabird and Root Architects
and Engineers in Chicago and with the
University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.
As an electrical engineer for the University
of Illinois Physical Plant Department
(1950-1957) and University of Illinois
Architects Office (1957-1960), he was
responsible for many of the University’s
in-house construction and maintenance
programs. Mr. Henneman was an adjunct
professor of general engineering at the
University of Illinois from 1969 to 1977
where he taught senior design engineering
classes with special emphasis on design
problem solutions. In 2005, Mr. Henneman was
appointed as a member of the University of
Illinois Foundation.

Henneman Engineering
Michael J. Henneman joined the engineering firm Carroll-Henneman, predecessor to Henneman Engineering, in 1971. The firm was founded in 1961 by his father, Ralph J. Henneman. A University of Illinois alumnus, Michael received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University in 1975, and a Master of Business Administration degree in 1983. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Illinois, Arizona, Texas, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Indiana.
Since the beginning of his career at Henneman, Michael has held multiple positions, including: draftsman, electrical designer and engineer, vice-president and corporate secretary. In 1991 Michael became president and assumed leadership of the 13 person Champaign-based firm. Currently, Michael is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the firm.
Henneman Engineering specializes in engineering, architecture, planning, technology, and construction services. The corporate headquarters are located in Champaign, Illinois with additional offices in seven cities across the nation, including: Chicago and Peoria, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Dallas, Texas and Iowa City, Iowa. Henneman Engineering now has 185 employees. Projects range from engineering studies to $200 million building facilities. Clients include businesses in the following sectors: industrial, healthcare, education, laboratory, infrastructure and commercial. Eighty percent of company revenues are from engineering design services in mechanical, electrical, structural, and process engineering.

Royal Properties
Michael, along with business partner and Beta Theta Pi fraternity brother, Rodrick Schmidt, founded Royal Properties in 1979. Royal Properties is a real estate development company which develops, constructs, owns, and manages multi-family student housing on university campuses throughout the United States. Royal Properties has developed 15 student housing projects, consisting of 7100 rooms on 14 university/college campuses throughout the U.S.A. These apartment development projects total $325 million in value. Michael is the Chairman of the Board of Royal Properties, and is a founding and co-managing general partner on all projects.
In 2005, Royal Properties sold a portion of their student housing portfolio to American Campus Communities Inc. (ACC), one of the nation’s largest owners, managers, and developers of student housing properties. As part of the transaction, Michael joined the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) board of directors of ACC.
Royal Properties has continued expanding in the area of student-housing, and has also recently started general mixed-use projects. The firm is currently in the process of building a mixed-use development consisting of a Four-Star 254-room hotel and a 148- unit condo residential project. The “505 N. State” development is located in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The $145 million, 40-story building, joint ventured and developed with John Buck Co, broke ground in October 2007. The building is scheduled for completion in Fall 2009. In addition, Royal Properties is also developing, “Marbella,” a 245-unit multi-family townhouse/condo complex on 40 acres in Fort Myers, Florida.
Bio-Alternative LLC
Michael Henneman is also a managing partner in Bio-Alternative LLC., a biodiesel fuel producer. Bio-Alternative has a biodiesel process technology utilizing innovative and proprietary techniques to accelerate and enhance traditional biodiesel reaction, thus decreasing waste and process time, reducing energy and raw material needs, increasing product quality, and increasing the percentage of usable product to 98% of input. Also, the patented biodiesel process reduces up front capital and ongoing operation costs by as much as 80% versus traditional technologies. Bio-Alternative’s turnkey mobile container biodiesel production unit is easily scalable from 5.8 MMGY or multiples there of. The process employs their patent pending technology to create a continuous flow multi-feedstock biodiesel process.
Community Involvement
Besides having a constant role in these companies, Michael has been involved in a variety of community and religious activities. He has helped broaden the community by donating to noteworthy causes. Michael received the Pere Marquette Award from the Peoria Diocese for his involvement in the propagation of the Catholic faith in May 2006. Also in 2006, Michael gave the High School of Saint Thomas Moore in Champaign, Illinois, a charitable gift, earmarked for the construction of a new football and track field. Henneman Field will be used by all of Saint Thomas Moore’s athletic teams and Catholic grade schools in the area. In 2007, Michael and his wife, JoAnn, gave a generous gift to the Champaign Public Library Foundation. This donation helped the foundation reach their fundraising goal to build a new and improved public library for the community of Champaign County.
Michael has been a member of the University of Illinois Electrical and Computer Engineering Advisory Board in 2002. The board recognized Michael for his work and dedication to the field of engineering. One of the major career highlights that Michael recognizes also stems from the University of Illinois. In 1986, Michael designed and engineered a computer-based energy management system to save energy when running the University chilled water air conditioning system. The design was so unique that the firm received a Design Award of Excellence from the United States Secretary of Energy, John S. Harrington.
Michael has served as Chairman of the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of Illini Chapter of Young Presidents Organization, Director of Bank Champaign, Director of the Urbana-Champaign Economic Development Corporation, past Co-Chairman of St. Matthew School Education Commission, member of Illinois President’s Council, the Fighting Illini Scholarship Fund and Chairman of the Sigma Rho Beta Theta Pi Fraternal Building corporation. He has also served on the City of Champaign Zoning and Building Code committees, State of Illinois Professional Engineering Energy Committee and the University of Illinois Professional Practice Group of the Department of Architecture. Michael is a member of the American Consulting Engineering Council, National Society of Professional Engineers and an affiliate of the American Institute of Architects.
Michael is a native of Champaign, Illinois, and currently lives there with his wife and children.

B. Summers, P.E.
President
Joe has more than 30 years of electrical engineering experience for both
the public sector and private industries. Summers earned a Bachelor
of Science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1969, and
he is a registered Professional Engineer in the States of Illinois,
Indiana, and Florida. Summers was co-founder of S&R Engineering,
Inc. of Urbana, Illinois, which merged with Henneman in 1996. Summers is also a founder and partner of HWS Energy Partners, L.L.C., an
energy services firm that develops distributed power plants and provides
energy services for clients throughout the Midwest. He received a
National Certificate of Merit Award from Energy User News for energy
efficient designs in commercial buildings. |

Chief Financial Officer
Herman earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of
Illinois at Chicago and a Master's degree in Business Administration from
Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. Lehr has
over 25 years of experience in the financial and business administration
areas. Prior to joining Henneman Engineering, he was a senior
manager in Program Finance at Northrop Grumman Corporation where he was
responsible for financial program control on a variety of electronic
technology contracts. As Chief Financial Officer at Henneman
Engineering, Herman oversees accounts payable and receivable, payroll,
cash flow management, financial policies and planning. |

K. Rogers, CPSM
Vice President of Business Development
Karen
has more than 20 years of experience as a principal and marketing
professional with national and international engineering and architectural
design firms. Rogers achieved the designation of Certified
Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) in 1993 and was one of the first
professionals in the country to be certified by the Society for Marketing
Professional Services (SMPS). She has been an active member of SMPS
since 1983. Prior to joining Henneman, Rogers was Vice President,
Corporate Director of Marketing for Huitt-Zollars, Inc., an ENR Top 200
Design Firm based in Dallas, Texas. As Vice President of Business
Development, Karen focuses on client development, marketing, and

Walt has more than 18 years of experience in healthcare business development and 25+ years in healthcare executive management serving in a variety of positions at hospitals in Minnesota, New Mexico, Kansas, West Virginia, and Oklahoma. A seasoned professional, he focuses on healthcare and higher education client development and service nationwide. Shain received a Masters in Hospital Administration from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado State University. Shain is a Life Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. His business development work experience includes positions as Vice President of Hospital Building and Equipment Corporation (HBE) in St. Louis, Missouri, and Director of Business Development for Marshall Erdman and Associates in Madison, Wisconsin. Previous to starting the Dallas office, he was Chief Operating Officer and was instrumental in establishing the ISO 9000 Quality Program at Henneman Engineering.
Dave has been responsible for a variety of engineering projects including computer modeling, load calculation, HVAC, specialty piping, fire protection, and plumbing design for healthcare, laboratory, and educational research facilities.
He has written in-house training curriculum on project management, sustainable design, and the technical aspects of healthcare engineering.

Jim joined Henneman Engineering, Inc. in 2002 and has served as designer and multi-disciplined project manager for many complex projects.
He is a registered electrical designer and master electrician with experience in healthcare, higher education, research and commercial projects.
Jim has an extensive background in electrical low voltage systems and is a BICSI Registered Communication Distribution Designer (RCDD) and has been a contributing author to several publications.
In addition, Jim served as the ISO site quality coordinator for Wisconsin
when Henneman Engineering became ISO certified in 2003. |
