Boiler Replacement

St. Mary's Hospital

Madison, Wisconsin

This project involved the replacement of one existing 12,000 pound per hour fire tube boiler with one new 40,000 pound per hour industrial water tube steam boiler.  The project also included the replacement of an existing 40,000 pound per hour deaerator/boiler feed assembly with a new 80,000 pound per hour deaerator/boiler feed assembly.  The plant total steam capacity was increased to 126,000 pounds per hour.  The project required the new larger boiler and deaerator to be fit into the same areas occupied by the smaller equipment and also accessed into the plant without disruption to the plant and its ongoing operations.

Energy efficiency features designed into the project included a waste heat economizer heat recovery system, variable speed boiler feedwater pumping, and reverse osmosis makeup water treatment.  An airflow analysis was also performed to evaluate the impact of the boiler exhaust on the existing hospital air intakes.

Henneman Engineering provided all mechanical, plumbing, and electrical design services.
