Irwin Academic Services Center Addition

University of Illinois

Urbana, Illinois

The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) wanted to expand their services to student athletes, and additional student and support spaces were required to meet this need. vThis addition, to the north of the existing facility, consists of construction of a new three-story addition with basement of approximately 12,000 square feet, including student resource areas composed of a presentation room, a multi-purpose room, individual tutoring and study rooms, and computer labs.  Support areas include offices, preparation kitchen, and restrooms.  The project required new make-up air and variable air volume air handling systems.  The fan coil system was extended and the existing boiler was replaced with new high-efficiency condensing boilers.  The existing facility chilled water service was converted to service from the campus chilled water loop.  The project also required minor demolition and remodeling of selective areas within the existing facility to accommodate the addition.  The existing facility also received a new roof.  The underground chilled water, compressed air and electrical ductbank were extended through the site to serve the Police Training Institute to the North and the Ice Arena to the East.
