Lantz Gym New Addition

Eastern Illinois University

Charleston, Illinois

This project provided for the construction of a 30-foot by 156-foot (4,680 GSF/3,550 NASF) second floor addition to the east side of Lantz Arena to house offices for men’s and women’s basketball coaches and an academic services center for student athletes, including a classroom, computer lab, and tutor and study area.

Previously, office space for coaches was limited and located in areas not conducive to supporting and training University student athletes.  This project improved coaches’ accessibility to the athletes and provides space specifically devoted to the academic needs of the University’s student athletes.  Focus groups provided input into the decision to construct the addition: a basketball focus group consisting of men’s and women’s coaches and administrators; an academic services focus group and a strategic planning focus group, both consisting of coaches, administrators, and student athletes; and the Intercollegiate Athletics Board consisting of faculty, administrators, staff, and students.

Henneman provided complete architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing design services for all phases of the project.

In 2003, Henneman performed a study of the coaches’ offices in Lantz Gym to determine structural and code feasibility of adding mezzanine coaches’ offices within the existing gym. The project included site visit, research, and report.
