South Quad Utility Distribution Extension

Illinois State University

Normal, Illinois

The purpose of the “South Quad Utility Distribution Extension Plan ” was to provide a tunnel extension at Illinois State University’s South Quad.  The new walk-through tunnel ties into the existing north/south tunnel and utilities west of the Center for Performing Arts and north of the Center for the Visual Arts and routes both tunnel and utilities to the new College of Business (COB) Building and beyond.

This area of campus had numerous existing utilities and was major campus thoroughfare for pedestrian traffic. The design consisted of a steam distribution analysis from the powerhouse this portion of campus.  Based on our analysis, distribution pressure and line size recommendations were provided to minimize upstream steam distribution modifications.  The chilled water distribution system was also analyzed to accommodate future chiller decommissioning within buildings and to fully develop a chilled water loop tied to a existing central campus chilled water plant.  In addition to high pressure steam, condensate return, and chilled water piping, the tunnels have incandescent lights, 110 volt duplex outlets, and an aluminum cable tray.
