Transportation Education Center
Southern Illinois University
The Transportation Education Center (TEC) is a student-oriented educational facility that will be located at Southern Illinois Airport between Carbondale and Murphysboro. The TEC will unite the Automotive and Aviation degree programs, students, and faculty in one location. The new modern facility will serve SIU’s renowned transportation programs: aviation management, aviation flight, aviation technologies, and automotive technology.
The TEC will include five existing buildings and three new buildings. The new structures consist of a classroom facility, test cell facility, and storage facility all encompassing nearly 260,000 square feet and will provide sufficient space to accommodate $10 million in equipment for the automotive and aviation programs. In addition to classrooms, laboratories, and faculty and staff offices, TEC will include an aircraft engine test cell, learning resource center, student study areas, conference center with break-out conference rooms, and a large multi-purpose area that can be configured as an 800-seat auditorium or exhibition hall. The classroom facility will be designed to achieve LEED certification including such features as a geothermal heating system.
Henneman Engineering is providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design for the project.
