Ralph J. Henneman, P.E.
Chairman Emeritus
When Mr. Henneman founded our firm in 1961, he envisioned a company that would provide engineering solutions responsive to clients’ needs in an innovative, cost effective, and professional manner. Forty-eight years later, the Henneman team of professionals still shares his vision. Today, Mr. Henneman serves as Chairman Emeritus of Henneman Engineering, Inc. Mr. Henneman, a 1949 graduate of the University of Illinois’ Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), has 60 years of experience as an electrical engineer, mentor, and leader. In 1996, he received the University of Illinois’ Distinguished Alumnus Award from the ECE Department, and in 1994, he was presented with the Marcia Peterman Award in recognition of dedicated service to ECE. Mr. Henneman is a former president of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Alumni Board of Directors. Prior to establishing our firm, Mr. Henneman held engineering positions with Holabird and Root Architects and Engineers in Chicago and with the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. As an electrical engineer for the University of Illinois Physical Plant Department (1950-1957) and University of Illinois Architects Office (1957-1960), he was responsible for many of the University’s in-house construction and maintenance programs. Mr. Henneman was an adjunct professor of general engineering at the University of Illinois from 1969 to 1977 where he taught senior design engineering classes with special emphasis on design problem solutions. In 2005, Mr. Henneman was appointed as a member of the University of Illinois Foundation.
Michael J. Henneman, P.E.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
For nearly 40 years, Michael Henneman has been an integral part of Henneman Engineering and its tremendous growth since joining the firm founded by his father, Ralph J. Henneman, in 1961.
Throughout his career at Henneman, Michael has held multiple positions including draftsman, electrical designer and engineer, vice-president and corporate secretary. In 1991, he became president of the Champaign-based firm and today serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Under Michael’s leadership, the firm has grown to 185 employees in seven offices.
Michael is a University of Illinois alumnus and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University in 1975, and a Master of Business Administration degree in 1983. He is a registered professional engineer in the states of Illinois, Arizona, Texas, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Indiana. He is also a member of the American Consulting Engineering Council, National Society of Professional Engineers, and an affiliate of the American Institute of Architects.
Michael is a native of Champaign, Illinois, and currently lives there with his wife and children.

Chairman of the Board
Michael co-founded Royal Properties in 1979, a real estate development company, which develops, constructs, owns, and manages multi-family student housing on university campuses throughout the United States. Royal Properties has developed 15 student housing projects, consisting of 7100 rooms on 14 university/college campuses.

Bio-Alternative LLC
Managing Board Member
Michael is also a managing partner in Bio-Alternative LLC., a biodiesel fuel producer. Bio-Alternative has developed a biodiesel process technology utilizing innovative and proprietary techniques to accelerate and enhance traditional biodiesel reaction. Located in Covington, Ind., the biodiesel refinery has become a model of flexible, affordable, and high-quality biodiesel production.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Michael continues to be involved in a variety of professional and civic projects that have positively impacted the community.
- In 2007, Michael and his wife, JoAnn, supported the construction of the new Champaign Public Library.
- In 2006, Michael gave the High School of Saint Thomas Moore in Champaign, Illinois, a charitable gift, earmarked for the construction of a new football and track field.
- In 1986, Michael designed and engineered a computer-based energy management system to save energy while running the University of Illinois chilled water air conditioning system in 1986. The design was so unique that the firm received a Design Award of Excellence from the United States Secretary of Energy, John S. Harrington.
- Michael served as Chairman of the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of Illini Chapter of Young Presidents Organization, Director of Bank Champaign, Director of the Urbana-Champaign Economic Development Corporation, past Co-Chairman of St. Matthew School Education Commission, member of Illinois President’s Council, the Fighting Illini Scholarship Fund and Chairman of the Sigma Rho Beta Theta Pi Fraternal Building Corporation.
- He has also served on the City of Champaign Zoning and Building Code committees, State of Illinois Professional Engineering Energy Committee and the University of Illinois Professional Practice Group of the Department of Architecture.

Joseph B. Summers, P.E.
President
Joseph B. Summers joined the engineering firm Carroll – Henneman & Associates, predecessor to Henneman Engineering, Inc. in 1970.
Joe received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and then did graduate studies in Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois. He is a registered professional engineer in Illinois, Indiana, Florida, Nebraska, and Montana.
In 1977 Joe left Henneman and founded the firm, S&R Engineering where he was a managing partner until 1996 when that firm merged with Henneman.
In 1997 Joe started the industrial division of Henneman Engineering, Inc. called the Industrial Technology Group, (ITG) which has 30 employees with offices in Champaign and Chicago. In 2004 Joe began his current role as President of Henneman Engineering, Inc.
HWS Energy Partners
Joe was a founding partner of HWS in 1999. HWS develops, builds, owns, operates and maintains merchant power plants and renewable energy facilities throughout the USA. HWS is currently operating and maintaining a major ethanol facility.
HWS is also currently developing a Photo Voltaic (PV) solar cell electric generation group that provides turnkey installations throughout the Southwest and Midwest.
Community Involvement
Joe has participated in several community and professional organizations. He is the past president of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers - Champaign County Chapter as well as the Illuminating Engineering Society – Illini Chapter. He served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Faith United Methodist Church; and was on the City of Champaign Building Code Committee for 10 years. He was a part time instructor in the Construction Technology program at Parkland College.
Joe has received National Awards of Merit from the Illuminating Engineering facility and from Energy User News (EUN).
Joe has lived in Champaign/Urbana since 1970 and currently lives with his wife in Urbana. They have 3 adult children and 2 grandchildren.
David C. Mauck, P.E., LEED® AP
Senior Vice President - Director Dallas Office
Dave Mauck is a highly experienced engineer with 36 years of experience. He began his career with Henneman Engineering in 1981 and today is Senior Vice President/Director of the Dallas Office.
Dave spent most of his career in the Midwest before moving to Texas. Dave received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and an Executive MBA from the University of Illinois. He has also served on the Alumni Board of the UIUC Mechanical Engineering Department.
Since joining Henneman in 1981, Dave has been responsible for a variety of engineering projects including computer modeling, load calculation, HVAC, specialty piping, fire-protection, and plumbing design for healthcare, educational and industrial facilities. His experience in master planning and conceptual design for laboratories and healthcare facilities has aided in providing successfully engineered solutions.
Dave is a LEED accredited professional and is active in the Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter of the US Green Building Council. As Senior Vice President, he focuses on business development and works closely with the engineering team on a variety of current projects including a large high-rise mixed-use LEED-Silver project in the Dallas area, along with other projects throughout the country.
Dave is currently working on several projects that involve sustainable design including a building for Marathon Oil that will be a LEED-certified building. In addition, Dave and his team are working on various projects throughout the country for the military that will also be LEED-certified.
Dave is a member of several professional organizations including the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE), the American Society for Healthcare Engineers (ASHE), the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
Dave has one college aged son.
Thomas N. Bice, P.E.
Executive Vice President - Corporate Development
Tom Bice is a seasoned professional who brings 30 years of experience and a strong technical expertise in hospital and healthcare design to his clients at Henneman Engineering. Tom leads the firm’s multiple discipline teams to provide innovative engineering solutions for clients in both regional and national markets.
Tom joined the firm in 2002 to direct the start of the St. Louis office, and today focuses on the development of new clients and markets. His previous work experience includes positions with Cannon Design and HBE Corporation.
Under Tom’s direction, the St. Louis office has built a strong track record in healthcare consulting and design with projects completed for some of the St. Louis area’s largest hospitals such as St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and Missouri Baptist.
Tom works closely with owners and architects while directing a team of Henneman engineers who specialize in creating LEED designed, state-of-the art air handling systems for healthcare facilities along with all the physical elements of a project. In addition to healthcare projects, Tom directs corporate projects including the expansion of the national headquarters of Edward Jones in St. Louis.
Tom grew up in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and received both a bachelors and masters’ degree in Architectural Engineering from Oklahoma State University. He holds a National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Certificate, and is currently a registered Professional Engineer in 46 states. He is also a member of ASHE and ASHRAE.
Tom is married with two children.
Elizabeth L. Douglas, P.E.
Senior Vice President - Director Wisconsin Division
As Director of Henneman’s Wisconsin Division, Liz has built the firm’s offices in Madison and Milwaukee into an impressive and highly skilled group of design professionals. Liz has grown the Wisconsin team based on her unwavering belief that our business is built on the foundation of respect for all, teamwork, continual learning, open communication and empowering bright engineers to do smart, innovative things. Liz and her team work hard to maintain client service as their primary focus while implementing state-of-the-art engineering on a wide variety of award-winning designs.
Prior to joining Henneman, Liz started her career in the power and energy field, working as a consulting engineer specializing in trouble-shooting and providing immediate solutions to implement new code requirements in existing power plants. Liz joined Henneman’s Champaign office in 1993 and worked there for eight years before moving to Madison. In 2001, Liz became Senior Vice President of the Wisconsin Division. In that role, she is responsible for the technical quality and client satisfaction for all projects as well as staff development and growth.
Throughout her 16-year career with Henneman, Liz has overseen many challenging and important projects ranging from central chilled water plants and high pressure steam distribution systems to higher education, healthcare and laboratory projects. She cites projects with truly integrated teamwork between all parties as the most rewarding. Liz is recognized as an expert in HVAC system design for infection control and emergency preparedness for hospitals. She has lectured nationwide on these topics and has helped dozens of hospitals develop solutions.
A native of Urbana, Illinois, Liz received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a registered professional engineer in the states of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Liz is a member of several professional organizations including American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE); Wisconsin Healthcare Engineering Association (WHEA); Society of Women Engineers (SWE); and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). She is also active with many of her clients’ fundraising and charitable activities including the annual Heart Walk in Madison.
Jeffery A. Treiber, P.E.,

Senior Vice President - Director Chicago Office
Jeff Treiber has nearly 30 years of engineering and management experience. As a Senior Vice President and the Director of Henneman’s Chicago office, he is responsible for project performance, technical quality, staff development, business development and administration.
His diverse project experience ranges from existing facility system studies to campus infrastructure projects to major new healthcare facility projects to a lead management role in the massive $2.3 billion Chicago Public Schools Capital Improvement Program.
Since joining Henneman in 2003, Jeff’s focus has been in the education, healthcare, and energy sectors. He oversees a variety of projects that involve sustainable design including commissioning and LEED consulting. In 2006, Jeff and his team at Henneman received the International ASHRAE Comfort Cooling Award for their design for a chilled water plant at the University of Illinois/Chicago.
The Chicago office is very busy today with a variety of major projects including LEED consulting and commissioning for a new bed pavilion for Central DuPage Hospital and a large project to develop new branch library prototypes for the Chicago Public Library.
Jeff received his Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Structural Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1980 and a Masters of Science in Engineering Mechanics/Engineering Management from the University of Santa Clara in 1985.
His professional affiliations include American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Jeff grew up in the Chicago area and today makes his home in the suburb of Kenilworth with his wife and daughter. Active in the local community, Jeff is the immediate past-president and a continuing member of the Kenilworth Board of Education.
Paul G. Boland, P.E.
Vice President - Director Champaign Office
Paul Boland has more than 25 years of engineering experience and has been with Henneman Engineering since 1992. His specialties include utilities, power plants, boiler design, process layouts and piping design.
As Director of Henneman’s Champaign Office, Paul manages mechanical and electrical engineering projects with an eye for quality, scheduling and customer satisfaction. Paul is a mechanical engineer by training and his experience includes many successful higher education building systems projects for both new construction and renovation. He has led air quality and mold remediation projects in both healthcare and higher education.
Paul and his engineering team completed one of the firm’s more challenging and rewarding projects for the Illinois State Capital which included renovation of existing HVAC systems. For their work on this project, Henneman received the “Pride in Partnership Award” from the Illinois Capital Development Board. This award was given to the project that best exemplifies teamwork and collaboration between the owners, the Henneman Engineering design team, and the contractors.
Paul is a registered Professional Engineer with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Illinois.
Paul’s professional affiliations include the American Institute of Plant Engineers (AIPE); Illinois Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE); and National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).
Todd A. Spacek, P.E.,

Vice President - Director Iowa City Office
Todd Spacek serves as director of Henneman’s Iowa City office overseeing a team of 13 engineers, as well as a small satellite office in Ames. He has been a member of Henneman's mechanical engineering team since 1999.
Todd has more than 11 years of professional engineering experience and 20 years of construction experience specializing in the design and construction of higher education and healthcare facilities. Before joining Henneman, Todd worked for various general and mechanical contractors.
Under Todd’s leadership, the Iowa City office has completed a variety of large projects including a new chemistry building at Iowa State University and a boiler replacement for the University of Iowa. Todd has also overseen projects for Genesis Healthcare Systems.
Todd received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1998. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Illinois and Iowa. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); American Society of Healthcare Engineers (ASHE); and the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE).
Todd is involved in both the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce and the Iowa City Downtown Association. He is married and has three children.
Karl F. Miller, P.E

Vice President - Director St. Louis
Office
Karl Miller has been an electrical engineer for 16 years and has been with Henneman Engineering for more than 10 years.
Karl began his career in Henneman’s Champaign office and has worked on a variety of electrical projects including high voltage substations, medium voltage distribution, electrical generation, protective relays, commercial and industrial distribution, industrial control systems and lighting.
He has served as the Director of Electrical Engineering, Project Manager, Design Team Manager and Designer before moving to become the Director of the St. Louis office.
One of Karl’s most important projects at Henneman was the electrical distribution and substation design for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Another top project was the Basin Creek Power Plant in Butte, Montana -- a technically challenging project and true exercise in power engineering.
Karl grew up in a small town near Springfield, Illinois and went to college at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale where he received a bachelor’s degree. He also received an MBA from Eastern Illinois University.
Karl is a LEED Accredited Professional with USGBC. He is married and has one son.
Kip B.F. Doyle, P.E.,

Senior Vice President - Director ITG
Kip Doyle is the leader of Henneman’s Industrial Technology Group (ITG). He joined Henneman-ITG in 1997 and serves as Senior Vice President - Director of ITG. Kip’s mechanical engineering career spans 22 years, with a number of years in the petrochemical and construction industries.
The ITG group has approximately 30 engineers with offices in Champaign and Chicago. Under Kip’s leadership, the ITG Group specializes in industrial projects including power generation plants, food products, manufacturing, and renewable energy.
Kip has directed key ITG projects including the Medina Valley Generation Plant for Caterpillar in Illinois and the Basin Power Plant in Montana. Other top projects include those in the food industry for Kraft Foods, Quaker Oaks and ViscoFan.
In the renewable energy area, Kip and his ITG team have managed projects for Green Hunter (biodiesel) and for Central Illinois Energy (ethanol). In manufacturing, key projects include those for Dyno Nobel and Covidien.
Kip grew up in Urbana and received a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1987. He spent a number of years in the petrochemical and construction industries with positions as design team manager, construction manager and project manager prior to Henneman.
Kip is a registered professional engineer in Illinois, Florida and Nova Scotia. His professional affiliations include Illinois Society of Professional Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Kip is also a LEED Accredited Professional.
Kip is married with four children and active in the St. Matthews Catholic Church in Champaign.
Jacob M. Unzicker, AIA, NCARB, LEED® AP
Vice President · Director Architecture Division
As Director of Architecture for Henneman, Jacob Unzicker manages a team of five architects and designers who work on a wide variety of projects ranging from hospitals and healthcare facilities, to universities and multi-family housing projects. Jacob has been a member of Henneman’s Architecture Division since 1998.
With more than eleven years of professional experience in architecture, Jacob manages all architectural related design and construction administration within the firm, and has directed such key architecture projects for Henneman as the Enterprise Works Building at the University of Illinois and the Administration Expansion for Marathon Petroleum in Robinson, Illinois. Jacob is currently overseeing the architectural design of a large student housing project for the University of Texas in San Antonio.
Jacob is a Champaign native and received a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies and a Master of Architecture (Structures), both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
He holds a National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Certificate and is a licensed Architect in Illinois and Texas. Jacob is also a LEED® Accredited Professional and is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Jacob is married and has three children.
Herman W. Lehr
Chief Financial Officer
With more than 30 years of experience in the financial and business administration areas, Herman Lehr is Henneman’s Chief Financial Officer.
As CFO, Herman oversees accounts payable and receivable, payroll, cash flow management, financial policies and planning, information technology and human resource departments. His most important responsibilities at Henneman are to maintain a positive cash flow for the firm, while providing business management resources, visibility and guidance to company directors and officers.
Prior to joining Henneman in July of 1998, he was a senior manager in program finance at Northrop Grumman Corporation, a multi-disciplined global security firm, where he was responsible for financial program control on a wide variety of aerospace electronic technology contracts.
A Chicago native, Herman earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Master's Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis on International Finance from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.
Herman’s professional affiliations are the Association of Financial Professionals (AFP), the Chief Financial Officers Association (CFOA), and Computing Resource & Networking (CRN).
His local community involvement includes fundraising and events for the Champaign West Rotary Club. Herman is a member of the University of Illinois Quarterback Club and also participates as a coordinator for local Heart Association and American Cancer Society programs and events. He is also a private pilot.
Herman is married to Theresa Henneman Lehr, a mechanical engineer and officer with Henneman. They have two college age children.
